Amanda has had to overcome adversity since birth. She was born 6 weeks prematurely and was kept in an incubator the first 21 days of her life. She was only 4 pounds at birth and was so tiny I could fit her in the palm of my hand. I was so scared to hold her for fear I would hurt her. But it didn’t take her long to catch up and become an overachiever. By the time she was in school she excelled in all facets of learning and continued that thru High School. She went on to her classes at the Santa Rosa Junior College. Over the last few years Amanda has been working at Starbucks in Windsor as a shift supervisor.
On Feb 13th Amanda called me and said she had a really bad headache. Because I was a migraine sufferer for years, I thought that was what Amanda was suffering from as Well. The next day, on Valentine’s Day, Amanda was out with some friends when the car they were in was rear
ended. All the girls in the car were taken to the hospital. Amanda started getting her headache back. Because of this and the accident, the doctor suggested that she get a CatScan. She scheduled one for March 6th. During those couple of weeks Amanda was suffering major headaches and severe nausea. On the day of the CatScan, I left work early to be with her. By the time I arrived she was laying on the doctor’s office chair, barley able to keep her eyes open from the pain. The doctor came out and asked the lady next to us if she could move away. At that moment my heart sank and I began to have this horrible feeling inside of me. Even so, what
came out of the doctor’s mouth was far beyond what I could ever imagine. He said they found a mass in her brain and he was admitting her to the Hospital immediately. I had to leave the room. This had just become the worst day of my life. And I’m sure that’s nothing compared to what Amanda was feeling.
Amanda was then admitted to Memorial Hospital for tests and MRI’s. After the neurologist had time to look over the MRI and other tests, he came to the conclusion that Memorial was not fitted to deal with her condition. She was then sent to UCSF via ambulance. After more MRI’s and tests, Amanda was scheduled for brain surgery to have whatever was in her head removed. When the surgeon got into Amanda’s brain and
removed the tumor, he found another, smaller one behind it, which was deeper and connected to the area of the brain that controls the motor
skills, so they had to stop. Another surgery was scheduled so they could map the tumor to not interfere with her motor skills. After Amanda’s 1st surgery she did not look the same from the swelling in her brain and half her head had been shaved. She had the huge scar that went from the back of her head all the way to the front. I was the first to see her in the ICU and it was devastating to say the least. This is NOT what being a Parent is supposed to BE!! After a few minutes, I couldn’t take it anymore. I ran out into the hallway and just broke down into pieces!!!!!! Thank God for my family and their support. I don’t think I could have pulled it together this time without them.
After the 2nd surgery, during which they got almost all the tumor, Amanda began her recovery and was out of the hospital in just a couple of days. She than came home to rest and recover for a couple of weeks. After a week or so, she began to get her energy and health back. Before she
had to start her chemo and radiation treatments along with the clinical study treatments she was blessed to be a part of. The first 3 weeks of the treatment went by, Amanda was doing fine, full of energy and life. I even took her to Disneyland for a weekend getaway. But since then,
her energy has gone away and she is tired all the time. She sleeps most of the day and night. Between the radiation (radiation is nothing short of medieval!!) and chemo, she is starting to lose her hair and the clinical drugs are giving her a rash on her face. This is just a
horrible nightmare for such a beautiful girl at the young age of 21. But she only has four more radiation treatments and then she gets 2 weeks off all her medications to start getting her health and energy back. Also the Brain surgery has taken away some her peripheral vision so until she
gets this back she won’t be able to drive which is totally devastating to girl of that age. I know that Amanda will make a full recovery and go on to
lead a normal life, to be a wife and a parent herself, to drive again, to work, to do everything a young woman is supposed to be able to do ~ which is what she wants so badly.
But right now she is facing a battle and she needs help – emotionally, financially, physically, mentally, and any way that you can imagine, she needs help. But she is strong and from the beginning she has overcome and conquered ALL and she WILL AGAIN!!
